The main scientific direction of the department is heat transfer and hydrodynamics in the fields of centrifugal forces

It covers seven sub-directions: 1) internal swirled and vortex flows [3, 4, 8, 10 – 12]; 2) surface-vortex systems (dimples of various shapes) [4, 15]; 3) rotating channels and surfaces [2, 7]; 4) flows near convex and concave surfaces [13, 14]; 5) the centrifugal instability of Gertler and Taylor [7, 14]; 6) gas turbine nozzles and curvilinear channels with a three-dimensional flow and local vortex structures [1, 5]; 7) new vortex technologies of aerothermodynamics [6, 8, 9, 16 – 23]. For each of these directions generalizing monographs have been published.

Some of the new scientific results were obtained in the laboratories of the Universities of the cities Cardiff and Bat (Great Britain), Stuttgart (Germany), Universities of Utah State (Salt Lake City, USA), Minnesota (Minneapolis, USA) and New OrleansState (New Orleans, USA), US Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, USA) in carrying out joint international projects and individual grants.

23 monographs [1 – 23], 4 teaching aids for universities [24-27], 650 papers (about 100 in English) and 230 author’s certificates and patents of Ukraine and Russia were published on the main scientific direction of the department. The most important scientific publication is the fundamental 10-volume monograph “Heat transfer and fluid dynamics of flows in the fields of centrifugal forces” [1 – 9, 16], which is widely used in scientific research and design of many types of thermal power machines and plants.

The Department also conducts research in the following areas:

Computer simulation of thermogasdynamics of power plants: simulation of aerothermodynamics of boilers, heat transfer surfaces, film cooling systems of gas turbine blades, gas tracts of pulverized coal boilers: chemical kinetics of formation of harmful emissions into the atmosphere, calculation of velocity, temperature and concentration fields, calculation of emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere, optimization of fire space.

Combustion and gasification of solid and liquid fuels: combustion of biomass, lignite, peat, fuel mixtures (biomass-peat, biomass-brown coal), waste motor oil, water-coal fuel, gasification and pyrolysis of biomass, optical characteristics of coatings of combustion chambers and electric furnaces, the development of devices operating on the principle of multi-stage oxidant supply. The department has developed a biomass gasifier with a capacity of 20 kW, there are installations for burning biomass and mixed fuel.
